It is hard. There aren't good answers. The end is not going to come as quickly as most people believe; staying inside doesn't magically confer immunity, so two weeks after we stop social distancing, we'll start seeing uncontrolled exponential growth again.
Our three options are to let it rage through the country, killing hundreds of thousands and probably over well over a million Americans; staying inside until a vaccine is developed (12-18 months, as far as I've seen it estimated) or it slowly burns through enough people that herd immunity is reached (god only knows how long); or interrupting social distancing with quick bursts so that there are flares of it that don't swamp hospitals.
It's a disaster. And it's a disaster that requires national cohesion and cooperation the likes of which we haven't seen since the second World War.
