I always figured that by that point Verin knew exactly who Alviarin was, while Alviarin had no idea Verin knew she knew. And Verin made the suggestion to needle Alviarin - a tiny resistance in one of the few ways available to her.
You know, some things in WoT are weird, once you know who the Darkfriends are.
