View original postI thought it was because industry on the continent leans toward Germany. Seriously, though, hasn't northeastern France historically been the most industrial part of the country?
Yes, but still it's pretty obvious if you look at a map - most French reactors are either built near the coast, or very, very close to the borders with Belgium and Germany. That's not a coincidence - putting them there means fewer NIMBY voters whose support you might lose.
View original postExcept nuclear works and wind and solar power haven't proven very economic or reliable, not least because wind & sunshine are not constants in the way hydroelectric or nuclear energy are. And nuclear power is not necessarily synonymous with uranium. It might be possible to fiss( ? ) other materials (plutonium? hydrogen? ) for energy. At the very least, nuclear power gives us time to figure out renewable resources between now and whenever we do run out of uranium.
Yes, I agree, nuclear should remain part of the equation.
View original postAnyway, with fossil fuel reserves at an all time high, the idea of running out is a fairly specious argument, since we don't know how much fossil fuel or uranium is on the planet anyway. Push comes to shove, we can always put poor people on treadmills.
It's true that we have come a long way since the first panicky reports of running out in the 1970s... but it's not only about running out on a global level, it's also about where it's located and what that means for your geopolitical position. It's all fine and dandy as long as you can get your oil from the US or Canada and your uranium from Canada or Australia, but rather more dicey if you have to get it from places like Somalia (which apparently has huge uranium reserves). Both for the purchasing countries and for the producing country, if they don't have anything resembling safe labour and environmental standards.
The Real Reason They Hate Nuclear Is Because It Means We Don't Need Renewables

It would be even better if more widely adopted.

Do you think the GND would have been proposed or even cooked up if the president was a Democrat ?

I assume then there would've been a less half-baked plan, indeed.

We still lack a long-term nuclear waste repository.

There's no political willpower to fund it. Until that changes we have no repository for n-waste. *NM*
