My son kept asking me questions during the movie, so I missed some dialogue. Did it explain why the Skrull families were on that ship? Were the Skrulls not really looking for the power source to help them escape the Kree? Were they only looking for their family members? Because they allowed the humans to keep the Tesseract on earth. Or at least they didn't dispute the decision to keep the Tesseract on Earth. I really got lost in the details of the end game in that movie. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it.

Mar-Vell was collaborating with the Skrulls and that's where they were hiding out, so she left the Tesseract with them, because it was a really good hiding place. The Tesseract was used to reverse engineer the source, I'm pretty sure it was not in the engine Carol was test-piloting or the Kree would have taken it and left her behind. So clearly, Mar-Vell doesn't need the Tesseract to power the drive, so I think the Skrulls were able to leave without it.
