Staubach was one of the best I've ever watched going back to his college days at the Naval Academy. He was an easy player to root for. I actually liked the Cowboys then. They were my second favorite team after the Giants. I didn't start hating them like I hate the Eagles and Redskins until Jerry bought the team.
That is, after Jerry fired the only coach the team had ever had, a man who took them from expansion team to title contender in just six seasons, led them to a then-record five SB berths and won two (only coming up 4 pts short both times against a Steelers dynasty that was arguably the best ever) his widow says he reverted to being a Giants fan, which is saying something given that they still shared a division, and had for all but two of Landrys 29 seasons coaching the Cowboys.
I genuinely do not GET Jerry Jones: The story was that he and Jimmy had wanted to (respectively) own and coach the Cowboys since they were college roommates amazed and inspired by Landrys dignified (even stiff) championship boy scouts—so why did they turn it into a team full of prima donnas and/or drug addicts? And it was clearly all Jerry, because it has only gotten (a lot) worse since Jimmy left and was immediately replaced by a guy whose chief "accomplishment" is being the only SECAA coach to win a "National" "Championship" while suspended from bowl appearances for little improprieties like players murdering each other in cocaine deals gone bad and coaches covering up their felonies to preserve those championship dreams. It is so bad that even the HoF championship coach who taught Belicheat everything he knows about discipline (if not ethics) threw up his hands in disgust after only a few seasons, because he quickly realized he had no chance of maintaining the order necessary for consistent victory as long as the owner insisted on recruiting flashy arrogant FAs who did as they pleased and went over his head to said owner each and every time he tried to lay down the law.
For people who grew up with Landrys Cowboys, THESE "Cowboys" get harder and harder to like, much less respect, each and every season. Whatever he thought he thought in college, Jerry manifestly does NOT want Landrys Cowboys: He wants Al Davis' Raiders (or possibly Burt Reynolds' Mean Machine.)
