View original postThe main plot lines suffered because it was underdeveloped with entirely to much time on characters who really did do much to drive the plot. You can completely remove the Fen side plot and the story doesn't change. He almost shut down the tracker and just about died trying to blow up the canon but except for almost deserting and almost getting his friend killed he accomplished almost nothing. I really don't understand his role in the series. Is he comic relief? Side kick? Trusted companion? Why is he even there?
We discussed this last time around - I still like Finn better than you do. But in this movie, yeah, he was really remarkably irrelevant. As I mentioned, I liked the casino side-plot well enough, but its lack of relevance seems like a really basic scripting error to make. If this were a TV show with dozens of episodes, no problem to spend one episode on something like this, developing Rose as a love interest for Finn. But it's a movie trilogy - you don't have time to spend that much time on a plotline that achieves almost nothing apart from that.
Still, considering your point below about how in the end the main criterium is if it's fun to watch, I had more fun with Finn's storyline than with the rebels being chased and Poe throwing temper tantrums.
View original postPoe was interesting but way to much screen time and not enough calendar time was used movinh him from hothead to careful leader. In general there was to much time spent on the good guys fighting themselves and the bad guys fighting themselves not nearly enough of them fighting each other.
Yeah. Or fighting each other in really boring, pointless ways - the First Order vaporizing empty vessels one by one comes to mind.
View original postThe reason I scored it as high as I did is that despite all the faults it was mostly fun to watch. While I was watching I enjoyed it and that matters more than how it holds up to post dissection.
Well, one factor that may have detracted from my enjoyment was that due to a movie theater screw-up, I ended up watching the 3d version without 3d glasses. It's still watchable that way, but I don't recommend it. Otherwise, I'd at least have appreciated it a bit more visually, I guess, and maybe paid a bit less attention to the weakness of the plot...

Yes. Both the good and evil camps are shallow imitations of the original series.
