I don't like that line, if I were writting it myself I would not use it at all.
And if I wanted to use a variant (even though I did not) I would have to majorly rewrite the sentence for you are correct the sentence as it is written right now is not correct. You would have to narrow the sentence down tremendously via saying words like "modern halloween" as we experience now and so on.

But whatever some things I share and I think in general people should share even if you do not agree with every specific detail and word choice in an article. Do you agree with this Shrike / Greg, or are you a purist / pedantic when it comes to history?
You may say this last question / sentence is me being a jerk, but maybe my point is we should not be so "formalist" in our viewpoints, for if we try to operate under such a perspective we are unobservant of change in culture, even though that change happens we are just less aware of it. "Outsider culture" often changes insider culture and we are often not aware of it until after it happens and we just assume it was always this way even if it was not.
