We did not rise to leadership of the free world because foreign leaders respected our nuanced policy positions and mature attitudes, actually, the perception of our lacky nations seems to have been exactly the opposite.

We're the leaders because we're the only acceptable game in town. No other country could conceivably pose a threat to us, so let them go elsewhere for leaders. I don't much respect anyone who needs a leader anyway.
