If Trump runs again I think a strong third party candidate might have a real chance. He or she could pull off enough of the moderate dems to give someone like Bernie a chance a there and plenty of Republicans who would love a choice besides Trump or Hillary. Ross Perot actually pulled a lot of votes and he was running against candidates who unlike the last pair had approval ratings above 50%. Our primary systems favors the more active extremes of the parties. Someone with enough money can just give that part a pass. They would just need to have enough name recognition to get media attention.
