I enjoy the wider scope and real story arcs of the new series (the previous new series is to be buried and forgotten along with Highlander 2), even though I dislike the level of slapstick comedy that has become so prevalent in modern "children's" cartoons. In particular I like the fact that they escaped from the static formula (new robeast shows up, smacks individual lions, form Voltron, form sword, kill robeast) that was at the heart of the classic series.
I remember as a kid, being annoyed, and complaining with friends, that the bad guys kept sending out the robeasts one at a time, and each one would ALMOST win. If they held them back and then sent out, like three or four at once, Voltron would be SOL. Also, that the lions would always give the robeasts a chance to whale on them before forming Voltron, like that was a last resort, even thought they ended up doing that in every episode. Sometimes, in this one, Voltron actually whips out his sword RIGHT AWAY, instead of letting the robeast nearly kill him in hand-to-hand combat! And Voltron gets to use guns, too!
When I first heard that there was a new show, from my nephews, I told them about the old one, and recited the opening intro, voiced by Peter Cullen "...a mighty robot, loved by good and feared by evil." To which my somewhat sarcastic godson replied, "Yeah, I don't think evil fears him so much anymore..."
