I'm rarely reading anything these days, but for about 15-30 minutes a night most nights, I've been reading the Folio Society edition of John Julius Norwich's three-volume history, Byzantium. The Eastern Roman Empire has fascinated me ever since I was a child (although I really don't know why I didn't choose to go into that subfield in college, considering this said fascination) and Norwich's books (I read an abridged one-volume edition about 3-4 years ago and enjoyed that greatly) read like an updated 19th-early 20th century approach to writing histories. I can tell there are certain narrative "blind spots," but Norwich's ability to tell a story within historia more than compensates for these minor faults.
