Nossy should not buy the iPhone 5, she should buy the iPhone 5s or newer, or the iPhone SE or Newer. The iPhone SE (Special Edition) is effectively an iphone 5s but with the guts aka the speed and battery life improvements of the iphone 6s for with the iphone SE they updated the cpu cores of the iPhone 6s and put it in the 4.0" form factor.
New non contract iphone SEs go for $399 on the apple website, but you routinely see them for $199 if they are locked to the carrier, even if there is no contract or subsidy the carrier will sell the phone for $199 (and make money off you after a few months due to your service.)

Why stay away from the iPhone 5 you may ask? I am not dissing your experience Jeordam, the iPhone 5 is a good phone. But just this month at WWDC apple announced it wants to transition its iPhone and iPad App store from 32 bit software to 64 bit software and the iPhone 5 is the last 32 bit iPhone, and the iphone 5s is the first 64 bit iPhone.
Now this apple store transition is going to take a few years, and WWDC is a conference for app developers and other people who make the software for iPhones Apps, Mac, etc. And even when the transition will occur this does not mean Apple will abandon any premade 32 bit apps for the iPhone 5 and older, but this very month Apple Announced that new fancy stuff, updated apps and such should be targeting the 5s and newer.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Jeordam. Your phone is great, but Apple wants to move on and if I recall the iPhone 5 was first sold in 2012 and via swapping to a 64 bit only app store 5s and newer users will get better battery life, and more memory is avaliabile for apps for they do not need to have a 32 / 64 bit mode for the app but can do 64 bit only. And since the iPhone 5 the newest iPhones (7 and 7 plus) are about 4 times faster, and the "budget" iphone SE is over 3 times faster than the iPhone 5.
