Ubisoft DRM cracked. Already. Along with some interesting statements from the company. Aemon Send a noteboard - 05/03/2010 03:45:07 AM
We'll start with the link.

Now the interesting bits, for those who don't like to read.

  • A pirate group called Skid-Row claims to have defeated Ubisoft's latest DRM.
  • Ubisoft says "nuh uh." More accurately, they say:“You have probably seen rumors on the web that Assassin’s Creed II and Silent Hunter 5 have been cracked. Please know that this rumor is false and while a pirated version may seem to be complete at start up, any gamer who downloads and plays a cracked version will find that their version is not complete.”(Trust me though, if Skid-Row has made a release available, it will be fully functional and playable. They're the big name in the scene these days, and aren't just some loudmouth fringe group. Ubisoft is in damage control mode.)
  • The promised interesting statement:

in an interview with PC Gamer, Ubisoft was asked what would happen in the future if Ubisoft took the servers down; how would players be able to continue playing the game? Response:“If for some reason, and this is not in the plan, but if for some reason all of the servers someday go away, then we can release a patch so that the game can be played in single-player without an online connection. But that’s if all of the servers are gone.”

As to that last statement, I don't think it's super meaningful, but it is interesting to have. It's confirmation of company intent to support games even after the authentication is gone. Doesn't mean it'll happen, but I'd give pretty good odds.

Anyway, thought you guys would be interested in that stuff, given recent discussion. :)

Steam is a form of DRM, but notice that Ubi doesn't have legions of fans like Valve does. - 05/03/2010 01:06:53 PM 422 Views
