Just in case anyone was actually curious, it was never the PSN. That was working, as confirmed by all slim owners and some fat owners.
The issue was the internal bios clock, genuine programming cock up which counted 2010 as a leap year which caused issues because clearly there was no 29th of Feb.
Anyway, all sorted now and minimal loss of trophies seems to be my only problem, though I do know from reading the official forums that some people lost almost all of what they had.
