The story is in the link, basically PSN is down for the older FAT consoles. As a result people are unable to play online, there have been issues with achievements, and best of all, many offline games that require online DRM cannot be played.
Need I say I told you so? Brings home rather nicely my point in the DRM thread around the technical nous of PS3 owners. How many of them truly understood they could lose the ability to play their offline games if the PSN network cocked up?
This is a major multinational with an active interest in supporting it's network. How much effort do you think a company trying to dump support for it's older games will give to disabling DRM or solving technical issues?

And this is why we PAY for Xbox Live. It goes down for maintenance.
