I feel like she's the most 2-dimensional of all the party members in the game. The developers don't seem to have had any direction to her character; rather, they just sat down one day and said "Oh, let's have the enigmatically selfish and dark mage-witch," and then left it at that. I feel like her personality does not mesh with the points that that you gain or lose from her, for instance. PErsonality and dialogue-wise, she's self-centered and a bit dark, but that's about the extent of it. But in terms of gaining or losing points with her? Some of the most evil actions will gain her approval.
If there was some other explanation, like arguing that she rewards independence, self-reliance and practicality, and despises weakness or sentimentality, then sure, I'd buy it. But if that's what the devs wanted, they weren't consistent with it. There are times when you gain plus points with her for going out of your way to be mean, even though it's not practical, and it's not necessarily matching any of those other qualities.
And there are other times when being good to someone, regardless of practicality, gains negative points from her. Even if it costs you nothing.
Eh, I might just be bad at reading her character, but I honestly think that the devs were just inconsistent with her, and failed to give her any depth.
All that said though, some of her dialogue is fantastic.

I've picked up this game about five times, and found the combat kind of annoying.

I don't keep her in party because she disapproves of me going around doing good deeds. *NM*

Heh, yeah. Some of her stuff is pretty great, particularly with Alistair in the party. *NM*

Some are deeper than others- but Morigan doesn't give you much at all (spoilers)

She still has sufficient depth for a video game

My complaint was that she's not snarky ENOUGH- she mostly just complains
