From a MTG midbie... Tavi Send a noteboard - 08/11/2009 05:11:50 AM
My favorite deck to play was my Elf deck, even though I didn't use it a lot. (For some reason, people thought Elves were god-powered, and would stop playing when I brought out the deck.) I liked Elves mostly because their powers supported each other, and made the deck that much better. Also, there were a lot of cheap Elves, I think I only had four cards that cost more than four lands to play, so it was easy to get everything out fairly quickly.

I had a few favorite combos of cards in the deck. At the top of the list is a combination of Wellwisher and Ageless Entity. Wellwisher gives you life equal to the number of Elves you have in play, and Ageless Entity earns +1/+1 counters for every life you gain. Needless to say, it was pretty easy to have a strong defender after a few rounds. Another combo I liked was a Voice of the Woods and an Ambush Commander. Ambush Commander turns my lands into 1/1 Elves that are still lands, and Voice allows me to tap five untapped Elves to put a 7/7 elemental into play. So for five lands, I can get a new creature.

I also liked my Sliver deck, but that one was more overpowered than my Elf deck, so there was no challenge in using it.

Probably the decks I used the most were my white weenie (Soldier) deck, and my Cleric deck. I had a few cards in the Solider deck to pump them up from 1/1 to 3/3 or so, along with some Bird Soldiers to cover the flying angle. The cleric deck was just to piss off anyone I was playing with, because it would take so long to kill me. I had a Silent Arbiter to prevent people from attacking with more than one creature, and most of my clerics had a damage-prevent ability that would soak up anything coming through. And as I got more clerics out, I could use them to gain life, making it even harder to get me out of the game.

But I fully admit I was nowhere near the best at the game. My decks did okay, but nothing that would have held up in any kind of serious competition. And thanks for posting something other than video games, nice to see some variety.
