Aemon's right- as long as your vital data is backed up, you might as well keep using the computer. Use diagnostic software if you can, but beyond that a broken HD is functionally identical to a HD you won't use for fear of breaking it.
I'd say back your data up, and just keep in mind that you may have to replace your HD within 6 months. Do you have an extended warranty? I had one with my Dell laptop, and they just sent me a new hard drive when mine failed. Otherwise, start saving up for either a new computer or a new hard drive.
