Out of curiosity... lord-of-shadow Send a noteboard - 20/10/2009 07:50:14 PM
Why such a disdain for electronic games? In what ways are they different, fundamentally, from non-electronic games? Is it just the social aspect? What about multiplayer video games, like Rock Band or Super Smash Bros? What about single player "traditional" games, like solitaire?

Also, why the assumption that single-player video games exist only to kill time? I play them for more reasons than that, and even if I didn't, there is nothing fundamentally wrong with "killing time," nor is it a given that a traditional game is always played for a higher purpose than killing time.

As a game designer I can tell you that the design concepts behind a traditional game are almost identical to the design concepts for an electronic one.

As for my list? There are countless, most of which I likely can't remember off the top of my head, and I'm not going to put as much time into it as you did for your's, but I'll list a few, in no particular order...:

Settlers of Catan
Carcassonne
Serenissima
Chess
Chinese Checkers
Go
Mastermind
Scrabble
The (Master/Secret) Labyrinth
Stratego
Sorry
Uno
Dungeons and Dragons
Magic the Gathering (although not so much these days, I have some problems with the game)
