Have the wizard or the elf send raiders or something after your party. Your players can then defend themselves and maybe take a prisoner or two. They can learn from the prisoner(s) what the Stone really is and what they are really facing.
If she only has 4 Stones, then the undead elf would be a bit concerned with the fact that so long as it is in relatively benevolent hands, (I'm guessing your players are not bad guys) the sacrifices would stop. That would seriously slow things down for her so its totally in character for her to send people to recapture the area where the Stone is, since you seem resistant to the idea of it being moved.
The only thing is, you want to be sure that prisoners can be taken and that someone is around who has the skills needed to interrogate.
