... though I did purchase the original console for the sole purpose of playing Final Fantasy Tactics. I always had the impression consoles were geared towards games I have zero interest in, and usually those that do catch my attention are also ported to the PC (or Nintendo exclusives) so I've never really felt the need.
What have I been missing? (that's an actual question, I know I sound like I'm taking a fanboy stand against consoles, but that's really not the point.)
I started out as a console gamer, so when I was considering buying a gaming pc, I had to think of reasons to justify getting one. For me, the main motivation was playing games like Elder Scrolls, which have large modding communities and are made better games for it. You can't get that sort of thing on a console, so I justified the purchase and got a very good pc.
But now I'm having the opposite problem. If I have a gaming quality pc, that can run just about any current game, and will likely do a fair job of running future ones for the next year or two, what need do I have for consoles? And I'm not really certain. Consoles are simpler than PCs, they don't require upgrades, don't crash as much (red ring of death aside), and have better multiplayer communities usually. But I've never been a big fan of multiplayer, and simplicity seems like a poor reason to spend several hundred dollars. There are games exclusive to consoles, however, and some games are only poorly ported to the PC. So I guess those would be the primary reasons for having a console. Beyond that, I suppose they could actually serve as media centers for a living room or television, but I've never used them that way and never felt a need to.
