I dislike most of the BG NPCs anyway, so I do not much feel the lack. Joel Send a noteboard - 09/09/2012 04:45:12 PM
I've been replaying SoA with a neutral-evil party primarily because of the Viconia romance and because of Edwin - if I just have six customized characters, no doubt they'll be stronger (and so blast through SoA and ToB), but you lose so much of what makes the story fun?

Don't really play BG1, but the same applies, you would think.

I have never used Edwin much at all, because his appearance in BGI is due to his mission to kill Dynahier, Minscs charge. Consequently, adding him to the party before rescuing her results in a showdown that leaves one of them dead, and even rescuing her before adding Edwin ultimately ends the same way. On top of all that, Edwin is a conceited ass and, IIRC, a specialist enchanter. That last makes sense given Dynahier is a specialist invoker, but it means that rather than getting extra invo/evo spells like her, Edwin gets NONE.

I like Viconia, and Eldoth and Skie had their moments in BGI, but for the most part the evil characters just grate on my nerves (though nothing like Khalid and Jahiera; I actually felt a little relieved when I found out Khalid is dead in BGII.) By the way, though it is obviously not an option with an all evil party, apparently it is possible, if you play her romance just right, to turn Viconia from evil to neutral by the end of the game.

Not in BGI, because there is only the one set you get on your way down to flood the mines. In BGII, maybe, because you get a set there plus you can use mithril tokens to get another on your way out of Spellhold. Two thieves is the bare minimum to do the stab-and-run schtick though; I like to throw in a Stalker for good measure, send in the "scout" half of the party to drop half the bad guys and then have the spellcasters follow in the other half to mop up anything left.

For sure in BGII / ToB. My ToB party has five pairs of boots of speed (entirely legally, that is); the sixth is my PC, a monk, who doesn't need it. Incidentally, monks seem to be the most overpowered of them all. My monk has a magic resistance of 93 as well as decent AC, excellent THAC0 and various other advantages like poison immunity, natural haste, hide in shadows/move silently (no backstab, but she really doesn't need it) and various special abilities that give tons of extra hits; between her and Sarevok I sometimes don't even bother to involve the rest of my party in fights. Turns out the 3 magic resistance per monk level caps out only after 25-ish levels; with a magic resistance amulet and the machine in Watcher's Keep on top of that, the result is near-magic immunity (plus excellent saving throws for the spells that aren't resisted). With enough healing potions to make up for the relatively low HP, she's close to unstoppable.

Hmm, I did not realize there were that many sets in BGII. Guess I am not the only one who got sick of the interminable delay in parties without them crossing previously explored maps. I have yet to play a monk in BG but have heard they can become game breaking at high levels, yeah. The sad thing is that is probably due to little more than Bioware modeling AD&D 2nd ed. rules pretty faithfully, because I remember people complaining about monks being too powerful in my tabletop days, too.

BG2 really irritates me in that you can't make a decent wholly evil team. there are loads of goody goods to choose from, but you have to have nutty jan or fragile haer'dalies who despite it all still don't really like being truly evil.

Should be doable in ToB, at least? Korgan and Sarevok for the muscle, Viconia for the healing, Edwin for the spells, plus PC. Okay, that leaves one slot for a neutral, but you can take one that isn't too goody good (personally, I keep Imoen in every party pretty much no matter what, but I guess she's not even neutral, so perhaps Valygar or so is better).

Valygar is good also though; his ranger class requires it. Neutral good, and somewhat dark, but good nonetheless. Incidentally, I found out something interesting through him in my last playthrough: Apparently, all those "only this NPC can use this item" prohibitions are class specific, which is to say, because my protagonist was also a Stalker I could use Valygars special armor and sword. Of course, that is somewhat complicated by the fact he is one of the more useful NPCs, but that problem can be resolved with the export trick.

At least you get a hot platinum blonde drow who pulls her own weight. :P

And more than that, with Greater Restoration. Ridiculous spell, honestly.

Yeah, Viconia is among the more useful NPCs also. I liked Safana and Coran in BGI also; unfortunately, the BGII plotline eliminates both of them early. I could probably tolerate the NPCs more if there were more like that and less the halfling paladin wannabe, or Xan, whose potent moonblade is permanently crippled by the fact he is squishy even by mage standards (I did derive a lot of amusement from his perpetually emo attitude and periodically informing me "we're all doomed...." for no apparent reason.)

I disagree about it being the only good third level spell;lighting bolt and haste are also excellent - 08/09/2012 06:26:08 PM 1414 Views
Yeah, I loved Lightning Bolt. - 08/09/2012 06:44:59 PM 1245 Views

well yeah, because there was no connection to figure out - 08/09/2012 06:59:49 PM 1395 Views
Right; I was never a big multiplayer fan anyway, but customized parties were nice - 08/09/2012 08:53:45 PM 1406 Views
Where's the fun in having a customized party and losing all the character interaction, though? - 09/09/2012 04:03:10 PM 1373 Views
