Is Ticket to Ride as broken as it seemed to me? (not Xbox specific, just the game itself)

I played a few games, and then figured out that if you ignored everything but building on the longest stretches of track (5s and 4s I think) then you almost always won, the scoring favored track length over your goal. I can't remember exactly, it's been a little while since I played, but I really lost interest in it after that (and a few of my extended family told me they didn't want to play it with me, since I ruined it ).
Was I missing something? Was it an issue that has now been addressed? Is there actually an obvious well-known counter-move, that my very casual gaming relatives weren't aware of?
