Then I suffered lag-induced death at the hands of Diablo. :P

I salute you. I don't think I've ever killed Diablo without dying at least once, and often rather a lot more. But there are plenty of death traps earlier on - and hell, with enough bad luck any combination of boss packs can become a death trap. If I played hardcore I'd just be doing Act One over and over again and try to get further than my previous death - which would get boring really fast, I suspect.
