NWN used a modular 3D system that enabled people to create their own dungeons/overland areas with ease. For BG you'd have to get people to hand-draw excellent background maps and then get someone to programme the game into them, which is a lot more work.

I guess that makes sense. But yeah, not very enthusiastic about the whole thing, then. I see no reason why they didn't just make a BG III in that case - in the Infinity Engine, yes, but with a new story, new characters etc. Of course the reviewers would call the graphics ludicrously out of date, but if they're only targeting the nostalgics anyway...
As the devs say on Twitter, there's some stuff they can do, but it's limited as BG was never designed to be fully customisable/modular from the ground up, whilst NWN was (and part of the reason why it's a bit bland, as the textures and designs had to be applicable to all manner of fan ideas and modules).

The main campaign of NWN is a bit bland, alright - but there are numerous custom-made modules that blow it out of the water. And some people really went to town on the hakpaks - the original game certainly had nothing remotely as cool as the city in the trees I came across in one module (what can I say, I'm a Tolkien fan), or the undead playable character in another.

Apparently "enhanced" editions of both... one wonders what that's supposed to mean exactly. - 15/03/2012 10:07:08 PM 753 Views
They can't remake the games in 3D without a ludicrous budget. - 16/03/2012 04:10:14 AM 732 Views
They'll probably update the UI, controls, and pathfinding. - 16/03/2012 05:55:58 PM 680 Views

When you say mods, does that include third party mods like tutu and unfinished business? *NM* - 16/03/2012 10:55:41 AM 321 Views
Yes. But Tutu might become redundant. - 17/03/2012 01:15:34 AM 765 Views

If they implement a NWN-style editor allowing custom adventures, it could get interesting. - 16/03/2012 08:33:19 PM 715 Views
that'd make me nerd-gasm. - 16/03/2012 11:07:01 PM 770 Views
