I really enjoy Caesar III, but the bugs with the food supply once you hit a certain level always frustrate me. I won't go in to those, but I'm looking for a substitute to play.
I don't know if there are any bugs, but I certainly remember getting endlessly frustrated about my consistent failure to keep a good enough food supply to have the best houses, yes, as well as a few scenarios (Lugdunum comes to mind...) that are a gigantic pain in the ass.
What I like about Caesar III is that it's SIMPLE, but not The Sims simple. Does that make sense? I tried to play Civ III, but the UI and sheer volume of mechanics and choices made the game more complex than I wanted to spend time on. It's not that I thought I COULDN'T figure it out, I just didn't want to take the time. When I played Caesar III, it was a demo from a Lords of Magic CD (god I need to get another copy of that one...) and it was intuitive and straightforward. Maybe it's just that the "tutorial" for Caesar III was more clear. I don't know.
Pharaoh is the successor game to Caesar III, uses the same engine and largely the same gameplay, but obviously set in Egypt and with some other changes. I've only played the demo, and for all of perhaps two hours, so don't have much of an opinion on how it compares to Caesar III. I recently chanced upon a description of Patrician 3 (on GOG - it costs all of three bucks), which seemed to be something somewhat comparable but in the Middle Ages.
Of course, those are all old games. Tropico IV that LOS mentioned is a better choice if you want something kind of recent... haven't played any Tropico game, but as I understand the premise, you're a Caribbean dictator building up your island - like Caesar III, it can be mostly peaceful or sometimes it can involve violence.
I liked Caesar III, any recommendations?

I haven't played anything that matches what you're looking for in a long, long time.

Quick note about From Dust: play it on a PC. I didn't enjoy the 360 controls very much. *NM*

Well, there's a Caesar IV, but it didn't get very good reviews. *NM*
