I love how the pragmatic thief is infinitely cooler than the idealistic warrior main character, and survives the series rather than fragging himself half way through it.

One of the original "gamers transported to their game world" stories (in fact the book of which you reminded me, the first in the series, was published the same year the D&D Saturday cartoon premiered.) In the first pages the main character tries to talk the chick he likes into joining them for a game, during which he comments that the previous week he chopped a half-orc in two, at which point he ponders whether that makes it two halves of a half-orc or two quarter-orcs. It is a little hackneyed at the start, but enjoyable, and gets pretty good around the third book.
