For me, Civ 4 is just a little bit better becuase of the control over culture and religion; I like how your area of control expands over the course of the game, and how you can control that. I didn't like Civ 5's system, and I never really felt in control.

Being able to purchase specific tiles at any time (gold permitting, of course) has been much more important for me than the randomness of which tiles I automatically grow into. That said, the computer does place preference on acquiring resources when it does acquire tiles for my cities. In this respect, I prefer Civ 5.

I was never a huge fan of the religions in Civ 4, and felt the missionary aspect of the game was too similar to Culture in function to be worthy of being included.

However, Civ 5 does have a nifty policy system, which allows you to unlock perks and features by being more cultured, which strikes me as more natural than policies being unlocked simply by researching the correct technology, a la Civ 4.

Policies is my biggest "fav" item from 4 to 5.

Anyway. Civ 5 is a great game, and is well capable of stealing a good 10 hours of your life at a time!

As long as those stolen hours are fun, it doesn't matter which game you're playing! :)
