And yet, as you describe your gripes, I could see where you were coming from. The Euphoria engine is awesome at gross mechanics but bad at the fine control stuff, which is why you can ride a horse through a storm and cut off a herd of stampeding cattle, but walking through an open door can occasionally be tricky.
That's a good way to describe it, yeah. I just don't see any benefit to RDR's control scheme, besides a bit more realism. I'd much prefer a more fps-like "smooth" control scheme. Sure, a real-life cowboy wouldn't be able to change directions that fast, but I'm not having more fun just because I got to watch him skid to a halt and pivot before going the other way. Rather, I'm frustrated that it took me two or three turns before I managed to face the guy I wanted to talk to.
Some of it is probably just game taste. I have spent hours exploring the game world, it's just that beautiful, and so a bunch of the things that put you off are what I actually enjoyed.
Sigh. I suppose. I think I'm coming off as someone who never likes to explore or experience, when that simply isn't true. I love that stuff. I can still remember the first time I walked to the edge of the calm lands in FFX. I'm not necessarily obsessed with progression, but I need something to keep me entertained. If I'm not going to rush from one main quest to another, I need something to do along the way. Here is a list of literally everything I can think of to do en-route in RDR:
- Shoot and skin wildlife.
- Shoot the random 3-4 bad guy spawns.
- Pick flowers.
There is no skill or effort involved in any of those things. They are not particularly interesting to watch. They always happen exactly the same way. Their primary reward is a small amount of money that is, for all I can tell, fairly useless.
I mean really, what else is there? I can't think of any other open-world game in which I've gone straight from story mission to story mission. The allure of such games is usually having an entire world at your fingertips, but in RDR, while you have the world, it seems to be quite empty of everything but pretty textures.
So, all told, I disagree, but on the flip side, if you went into this expecting to play Grand Theft Horse, I can see where you'd be disappointed.
Well you can't exactly blame me, as you'll find those exact words in a lot of reviews out there. I wasn't expecting Grand Theft Horse, though. I was expecting a sandbox game filled with all kinds of fun stuff to do and mess with. RDR severely limits your opportunities for emergent gameplay, and Sandbox games are not supposed to do that.
Red Dead Disappointment.

I've only played about five hours or so to date, but I liked it.

Thanks for the response. Note that I'm not really trying to say it's a "bad" game, exactly.

I know, and you're right. This was a post about why it wasn't my thing, not why it was a bad game.

Huh, I did not know that. Thanks. I really don't need to be buying a PS3, though... *NM*
