I know, and you're right. This was a post about why it wasn't my thing, not why it was a bad game. Aemon Send a noteboard - 14/11/2011 07:00:01 PM
Loved the horses, and their mechanics. Loved the game play. Loved the shooting and the guns. Loved the fact that Marston has really got his balls in a vice if, you know, he actually wants to save his family. He can threaten and push, but he needs help and can't do too much about that.

At some point, though, Marston would probably stop believing that they were actually going to help him. Perhaps after the drunk leads him into an ambush not once, but twice in a row? Nope, just another "you cut that out, y'hear?" I guess it just annoyed me that he never, ever backed up his tough-guy act. None of the guys he threatened even seemed worried, let alone scared. Couldn't he have pulled a knife on one of them (even if he didn't intend to use it)? Or given a letter with details of Nigel West's business scams to the Marshal, with instructions to open it if John didn't come back in 24 hours? Or. . .well, any number of other things. John just kept on taking whatever those three nutcases felt like piling on to him, wasting day after day of his time, and almost killing him on numerous occasions.

Oh, if your horse dies, click on a horse deed, the game will auto-save, and you can whistle for a new horse.

I know, but the deeds are expensive, and I'm a hoarder. You're right, though, that problem is solvable. My primary complaint was the inconsistent cliff-handling mechanics, though, not the wait-to-whistle issue. It's just that the game nearly always prevents me from riding over cliffs, so I've come to expect it. And then every once in a while, whoops! Over the edge with me and mah horse.

Oh, and I think it would ruin the atmosphere of the game if they labeled the horses in game... it's pretty easy to visually determine what kind of horse it is if you read the deeds and look for a bony, chunky, or muscular horse.

I don't mean for horses to have floating labels over their heads, I just want some pop-up text in the bottom right when I mount-up. Like GTA does with cars. That would make it much easier to start recognizing them visually. I don't want to read and memorize every deed description. >_<

Oh, and it's a horse, in a cowboy game. What kind of crazy thing did you want them to be able to do? Also, the jump button works for those low obstacles pretty well.

Heh, I guess I misspoke here, because you and Nate both misunderstood me. I don't want horses to be able to do crazy things, I just want travel to be fun. The crazy things I spoke of were what made GTA's travel fun. I'm not sure what the best way to make RDR's travel fun might be, but that's R*'s job, not mine.

I also can't say that I ever failed a mission for bumping into a person before. That's a strange one.

It's actually a pretty common complaint (although most people don't seem as bothered by it as I was ). I've read several gamefaqs guides that all mentioned it.

The beauty of games, especially solid games, is that one person can love them and another can find out that is just isn't their thing. Cheers.

Yep, and that's fair enough. Thanks for the response, and I'm glad you enjoyed the game.
