Well on a PS3, there are a couple exclusives that you should check out.
Infamous and Infamous 2 are good action games with RPG elements. They focus on a former bike messenger that gets hit by an experimental energy blast. He is transformed into an electrical charged 'hero', though whether he's a hero or a complete bad ass is up to you.
The Uncharted series (1 & 2), while not a RPG, is awfully entertaining, extremely cinematic, and just a whole lot of fun.
If you've been PC gaming, then you might not have played Red Dead Redemption or LA Noire, both by Rock Star, and both games are extremely engrossing, wonderfully created and tell a very good story. Red Dead is basically like playing a really great Clint Eastwood cowboy movie, with a great free roam world. LA Noire has you playing as a detective in the 1940's LA, and it features new Tech that forces you to discovery clues and interrogate suspects using those clues, and reading facial expressions and body language. Both games are very immersive.
Another game, also an exclusive, and a turn-based strategy game that I really enjoyed is Valkyria Chronicles. You play a tank commander in an alternate reality WWII. You build a squad and fight in battles. Each turn you give orders and progress the entire unit, then the enemy takes a turn, and so forth. The art is fantastic, done in a water color manga fashion. Fun and engaging game.
