Demon's Souls is definitely an RPG is terms of character building- you can build you character to be nearly anything- but it is DEFINITELY a near-plotless hack and slasher filled with maddeningly difficult gameplay.
I thought I'd love it, but I quickly tired of it (especially the whole life/death mechanic. To summarize: you spend most of the game as a corporeal ghost, able to do everything you could while alive but with a halved health bar. Every time you beat a boss/miniboss, which are pretty rare, you come back to life and have a full-sized health bar.
Only problem is, the game is designed (both by difficulty and general game philosophy) for you to die fairly often. So, for most of the game, you run around at half health. It always annoyed me)
