I don't care if it's complicated so long as it's clear.

I want to see:
A) Go outside (good)
B) Stay inside (evil)
Now, I don't know what effect my choices will have, obviously. Maybe if I go outside I get eaten by a bear, and if I stay inside I become king of an alien civilization. Who knows. My point is just that, while any action I take (in real life, or in a game) may have a variety of unforeseen results, I ALWAYS know what sort of motivation drove me to perform that action. My character should not become more evil if I think I'm acting morally. It's very frustrating to me when I try to help someone in a game, and all of a sudden, "EVIL +5. YOUR SWORD OF ALTRUISM TURNS TO ASH IN YOUR HANDS."
...or whatever.

I'm morally grey! Women love me, and men want to be like me. *NM*

It'd be pretty difficult to specifically reward you for being a 'gray' character. (Two games)

Take Knights of the Old Republic, for example

That's not so much an alignment as just metagaming the system.

I'd say that's evil.

of course, then you get into question of whether actions like that example are evil

That's actually a pretty narrow view of Neutral when it comes to Alignment or Morality.

You might want to try The Witcher series.

they don't reward it because, for the most part, they don't want you taking a middle ground.

Neutrality is often boring or selfish. Good stories seldom have truly neutral protagonists. *NM*

There's a difference between doing "bad" things for a good purpose, and being neutral. *NM*

I have an on-topic comment as well as a general rant on game morality systems.
