I'm talking more about somebody who acts according to their wishes, regardless of good or evil. Kind of like Slytherin house in Harry Potter. They're not cowards but they will generally look after themselves first. So, say for instance, that somebody is about to kill a baby. You could try to safe the baby but the odds are that it will cost you your life. A gaming system will give you evil points for choosing to walk away. So if you act to your own desires, it will led you to be somewhat balanced and you get no benefit for that. There should be abilities for benefit who do both "good" and "evil" deeds. That kind of guy is certainly not boring! Being unpredictable makes for an excellent narrative.

It'd be pretty difficult to specifically reward you for being a 'gray' character. (Two games)

Take Knights of the Old Republic, for example

That's actually a pretty narrow view of Neutral when it comes to Alignment or Morality.

they don't reward it because, for the most part, they don't want you taking a middle ground.

Neutrality is often boring or selfish. Good stories seldom have truly neutral protagonists. *NM*
