Most games don't need you to play the first in a series to appreciate the later ones.

Only a couple RPGs and heavily story-centric games come to mind.
Half-Life? You can skip straight to 2. KOTOR? You could skip straight to 2, but 1 is better in every way, so you might as well play 1 first anyways.
