I'd say that the gravity gun was a huge innovation.
Also, Half Life 1 was the first FPS with a real, fullbodied story, so a continuation of that is going to tug some heartstrings.
But I can totally get not being enthralled by the gameplay. I liked it, but it's not insane.
Episode 1 is OK.
Episode 2 is REALLY good. I liked it a lot.
