I ask because buying two machines (a gaming desktop, and a low-end laptop) is usually the better way to go. For $500-$700, you can build a desktop system that will beat the pants off any $1000 laptop, and still have money left over for a netbook/tablet/low-end laptop. If you get a desktop (particularly if you build your own), you also get redundancy, reliability, upgradeable and brand name components, etc.

Unless you absolutely must game while on the go, I'd strongly recommend building a desktop, and buying a low-end laptop for mobile internet/word processing.
