I guess the "Western" part should've been my main emphasis, since most JRPG writing seems off to me. Sure, there are generic Western RPG stories to point at, but they generally have a greater hold on my interest. (but Bioware, Black Isle, Blizzard and now CDProjekt have a lot to do with that)
One of my favorite PC RPGs was kind of a hybrid, though. Anachronox. It played a lot like a JRPG, but was made on the Quake 2 engine and written/developed by a western dev. (Ion Storm)
