Calibration FTW!
Well, it's really all a timing thing. Calibration helps, sure, but it doesn't make the problem go away. There is always some lag. It's electronics. Nothing will work exactly the way it's supposed to all the time.
...which I'm not, may play a part regarding timing, but I'm not sold. Any electronics-type lag, if properly calibrated, should be so miniscule as to be virtually absent. I've watched numerous video's of expert drummers on the hardest of song (metallica and such) and they have no problem with rhythm. Maybe it's a matter of them being accustomed to RB play (certainly in a general sense this is the case) but by no means would this issue cause one to have significant problems with easy drums as OP describes. That cannot be the issue unless he is not calibrated and has horrid lag. Properly calibrated, he would never have a timing issue, just a skill issue which requires practice.
I would slave, to pave the way, to sink your ship of fools.
Is it just me or are the Guitar Hero / Rock Band drums pretty hard to play even on "Easy"?

I've only played Rock Band on one occasion, but the drums seemed to come pretty naturally.

I always just assumed that I was bad at it because I lack rhythm.

Haven't played the drums on it, but I'd guess it's something you need to get used to.
