Getting a queen....(here's my typical build order)

is one of the first things that I do after the Spawning pool gets done....
<Game Start>
Get drones going....
Keep building drones until unit build is maxed at 10.
Have two drones build into extractors...<this decreases units to 8 of 10).
Once drones are in egg pods, cancel extractors and get them back to harvesting mineral.
Keep harvesting until you have enough for 2nd hatchery (expansion base is preferable, but at main is good enough is expansion is not defendable).
(You still have 12 of 10 units here). Build Second hatchery (now down to 11 units). Build Spawning Pool (10 units). Start an overseer. When overseer is up, train 3 more drones (for extractor build & gas harvest). When spawning pool comes up, get out queen & zerglings. You'll also need another overseer. After this, get another set of drone/extractors and zerglings out. You'll also need to get a drone up for roaches (which by now, if you haven't been attacked, you'll need). Upgrade hatchery as soon as you can to get hydras up....from there, flow with it....
This build order works very well for me. Its all about timing. If you screw it up, you're gonna get rolled over, but if you get it right, you are at a distinct income advantage early/mid game. At this point, you gotta attack....if you wait for Terran/Protos to get rolling, it gets a bit dicey.

Balancing the least played and weakest race doesn't make it the best.

I think the first patch pretty much leveled out the playing field.

Exactly. And if you get roaches, your midgame gets mad delayed.

Queens CAN work... but you have to do awesome micro, and they're better at defense

I've found myself enjoying the Zerg, and not using Voids when I go Toss anyway, so...
