Okay, so I'm in the silver league for all of the Starcraft online games types. I'm an experienced Starcraft player, and a generally experienced strategy game player. It's just that I don't feel GOOD about myself as an online player. I generally win about 50% of my matches. Sometimes I annihilate people, but sometimes I get annihilated myself... sometimes it's a lucky win, and other times they're lucky. I want to win more, but it seems like other players know more than I do about how to play.
I think it originates in the fact that I've had to alter my gameplay significantly. When I play the AI, I'm generally a turtle... I make a hugely fortified base and send a massive force much later in the game to destroy them. Online gamers expect the early rush in most cases.
I'm a protoss player. This is what I generally do...
- make lots of probes and get going with the crystals and vespene.
- decide either on Air or Ground attack.
- If Air... go as fast as I can to void rays and make them. This can take significant time.
- If ground... dark templars, they seem to have a significant advantage with their permanent cloaking and high damage.
- Occasionally I'll have some zealots.
I'm sure you can see why an early rush would sometimes get the better of me, especially against guys who like the Zerg. Should I alter my tactics?

What I hear the most is that you must scout ASAP and change tactics based on the results.

It's set up so you're supposed to win about 50%, right?
