GTA Chinatown Wars is the first. Easily in my top 2 for all-time DS games. It uses the old top-down view of the first few GTA games, and brings back rampages, unique stunt jumps and so on.
The second is Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. This game is a huge amount of fun, and the dialogue is hilarious. It's somewhat similar to FF or Pokemon in that the battles are turn-based, and you gain experience points after battle, with the eventual aim of levelling up.
Those 2 are my favourite games. Otherwise, pretty much what lord-of-shadow mentioned (I loved both Zelda games btw, and the second Advance Wars is also pretty awesome)
EDIT: Just remembered one more. Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga is also an excellent game, with lots of mini-games too to keep you entertained. Also, the cut-scenes are sometimes quite hilarious.
Just don't get Lego Star Wars: The Original Trilogy. That game is full of so many glitches that it's near impossible to finish.
