If you are playing a 3D game, you pretty much need a graphics card. I'm sure there are exceptions here and there, but they're just that: exceptions.
Starcraft 2, unlike 1, is in 3D, and it makes use of a lot of 3D features - lighting, shadows, etc. - that put a GPU to use.
It's not a graphically demanding game by any stretch of the imagination. Those are some of the most forgiving specs I've seen in a long, long time, on such a big-budget game. But they can only be so forgiving, and asking for a graphics card isn't that much. They've been the standard on any computer meant for more than word processing and internet for years.
