Definitely take your time to enjoy the ride without worrying about perfection. It's pointless anyway, as the time you spend eking out another percent or two would be more productively spent just gaining another level.
That said, add-ons are a lot of fun. I probably spent about a third of my total WoW related time messing with add-ons, and getting cool stuff working. If you don't like the process of finding add-ons and tweaking them until they finally work, don't do it just to give you "the edge," but yeah. . .they can be fun.
