If any effort had gone into the plot and characters of this game, it could have been awesome.
To me, that's like complaining about plot in characters in Super Mario World, or something similar. It's all about the gameplay. You don't spend fifteen minutes between sections watching cutscenes, you're just thrown right into the action. I prefer it that way. It's refreshing and a nice change of pace.
Personally, I don't find the enemies or settings all that generic. I mean, the Dragon god? The skeletons? Yes, they're skeletons, but do they move and look like any you've seen in other games? The mantas? The phalanx was generic? The leech boss? Sorry, I'm not seeing it. Do you have any examples of fantasy games that are extremely unique?

It's not about the plot.

It's more... the presentation. You walk into a room. Oh, there's the boss.
