Too bad for America. Joel Send a noteboard - 23/03/2010 04:29:19 PM
Yes, THIS bill didn't do much in the way of cost mitigation.

And I'll be annoyed if the next one doesn't...but until then, I'm willing to wait.

You're falling for the "we have to pass this horrible bill now or healthcare reform is doomed for a generation111" BS that Obama and Co. used to gain support for the bill. In Washington, declaring victories heading into elections is more important than actually ACHIEVING victories, which is why Obamas instructions to Reid on negotiations with Lieberman basically consisted of "give away the store if you have to, but get his vote. "

After all the struggle and damage to both sides NO ONE will have any taste for revisiting this issue. Especially since the prevalent view will be that it's finally been settled (which is the first thing opponents of real reform will say, followed by claims their charges of incremental socialism were right all along. ) This bill is ironic in many ways: It's biggest critics are its greatest beneficiaries, it's biggest supporters are its most unlikely defenders and since few cost controls will exist even after the reconciliation bill it will likely just inflate costs as the mad scramble for a trillion plus dollars ensues. And, of course, most ironically, passing it will actually accomplish what it's supposed to prevent: The end of healthcare reform for a generation.

We're done with healthcare for a while unless republicans take power.

I doubt you'll find a majority of Republicans who want to address healthcare reform in any other terms than repealing this bill and/or turning healthcare reform into their perennial baby, tort reform (because limiting Toyotas liability when a faulty accelerator kills someone will obviously lower medical costs for the nation. ;)) It's not a winning issue for them; they might manage to repeal the individual mandate, but that's about it. Fact is, for all the whining, this is a VERY industry friendly bill (which has been a hallmark of Obamas legislation to date) so they have no reason to reopen this can of worms if they win a majority and every reason not to do so. You'd think that the way healthcare is consuming a huge and rapidly growing chunk of our GDP would stir some patriotic fervor to save the country from bankruptcy, but there's been no sign of that so far from either party. My working theory is they just plan to stash their salaries in the Caymans or Switzerland and move to Europe, but if I were Europe I wouldn't let them in after what they did to THIS country.

We can't pay for the subsidies; even after the tax hike they increase debt in the short term. - 23/03/2010 04:12:14 PM 405 Views
