how is al-qaeda different from, say, an organized crime family? "vast network of people with a stated goal" sounds a lot like a mob "protection" racket, and uses similar violence to enforce its point. the main difference i can see is that the object of the violent acts between the mob and al-qaeda are slightly different, but their tactics are remarkably similar imho.
