I think it is too bad the Dallas Morning News chose to not answer the question raised about Crocket and Bowie being included and the questions about what they did that the Hispanic at the Alamo did not. Crockett and Bowie were famous men in their own right and them dying in that battle is significant. Bowie led a large group of men to the Alamo and was considered the co-commander. Crockett also led a group of men there and had been a US Congressman. It would be insane to teach about the Alamo and not mention those two men.
If there is no mention that Hispanic were fighting there then that is a mistake and it should be corrected but students shouldn't be required to learn their names simply because they are Hispanic. Well they be required to learn the other 180 or so men’s names as well? I know when I took Texas history way back when Carter was president we learned that there were Mexicans fighting with the whites. Now my history teacher taught from lecture and not the text so I really can’t say what was in the book.
I do agree with your other comment about parents and teachers being vital to the process and the reality is teachers will decide what they want to focus and stress regardless of what the text says and that will have the biggest impact on the students.

I'm assuming Art. 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli 1797 is banned from Texan history lessons, then?
