I think part of the drive towards homeschooling is the political agenda that some groups are pushing on our children through public schools. My son’s math text book had more about global warming then it did about math and some of the teachers felt no qualms about using their classroom to force feed their political beliefs. Though to be fair it was both sides of the political spectrum who did that.

I wouldn't home school my kids unless I lived in a very poor school district. First I am to o lazy and they would drive me crazy. Second I have faith in my kids and I think I can show them enough of the other side to not feel threatened by the ideas that they would be exposed to. But I do see how people will strong political and social beliefs would feel like they were being undermined by what is taught in schools and I fall in favor of supporting parent over the state in most cases short of abuse or neglect.
