I know it's a play rather than a book, but still it's the one I would chose.
I think it would be quite delightful playing the part of a wastrel named Ernest in a decadent late Victorian London, skipping out on boring commitments and obligations to go visit poor Bunbury in the country.

Heh, unless you offed Ernest, you'd have to play a wastrel friend to a guy named Ernest. My question means you get to visit an already existing set of characters, not replace them.
So nothing medieval?
